What is Mindfulness?

What are we are talking about when we talk about Mindfulness?

To begin, Mindfulness is a word.  Like other words, there is no one right way to understand, describe, or even to practice Mindfulness.  In fact, practicing Mindfulness is much easier than describing it.

Mindfulness may be defined as paying attention to the present moment, on purpose and without judgment, with an attitude of affection, curiosity, and kindness.

As a disciplined practice, Mindfulness is bringing purposeful, non-judgmental attention to one's present moment experience of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. By cultivating the ability to focus one's attention in skillful ways, a person can develop the ability to:

  • Reduce stress and suffering from physical or emotional causes.

  • Derive greater joy and fulfillment from pleasurable experiences.

  • Relinquish harmful and unhealthy habits.

  • Access inner sources of peace and wisdom.

  • Feel a sense of stability and freedom despite inevitable changes in life.
